Las Cruces, NM featured in "Where to Retire" magazine!
By Bonnie Thorkildsen

Once again, the town of Las Cruces, New Mexico is featured in a major retirement magazine. The cover page of the May/June 2010, "Where to Retire" magazine features, "The Diverse Draws Of Las Cruces, NM". The article was written by New Mexican Dave G. Houser, an award-winning writer-photographer based in New Mexico. The article tells the stories of several retired couples who moved to Las Cruces in recent years. Having been semi-retired myself, I still learned some things from this article. Present day retirees do not sit on the front porch and wait for their grandchildren to visit. They are active people, still involved in the community, looking for new experiences. Las Cruces has more than enough diversity to keep the most active of these retirees busy. Las Cruces was not the first choice for several of the people followed in the article. They tried other places, then chose to make Las Cruces their home. Exerpt: "Once they decided to seek a more urban setting, Gerry and Linda visited Albuquerque, Tucson and Phoenix before making Las Cruces their choice. Like the Gordons, they found the city to be just the right size. "Plus, it's infinitely easier to get around here than in those major urban areas," says Gerry. "We're no more than 15 minutes from anywhere win the city we want to go." Both couples remain highly active. Harvey, 72 and Marjorie, 67, play golf several times a week at the Sonoma Ranch course, and Marjorie is a regular on the local mah-jongg and domino circuit and assists with the charity fundraising for the Progress Club, a service organization affiliated with General Federation of Women's Clubs. Gerry and Linda share an enthusiasm for long-distance running (half marathons) and motorcycle touring..."
